I have been using Firefox for several months now at the urging of a

that annoys me greatly. It has to do with "Tools/Options/Manage
Add-ons/Plugins" default settings. I do not like to have Flash enabled
as a rule because it is the single greatest source of extremely annoying
animated ads out there. I keep it turned off until I need it then it is
off again. The problem

I'm very interested by XULRunner to build a cross platform app, but
I'm just beginning with it, so sorry in advance if I ask dumb

I've done all the basic tutorials like https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Getting_started_with_XULRunner

I'm really interested in packaging the app as a distributable exe/app,

nsIAtom changes
Hi All,
I recently landed the patches in bug 534136. This introduced a few changes:
1. Atoms now hold UTF16 strings, rather than UTF8 strings. All the same
APIs still work, such as do_GetAtom(myCString) and
atom->EqualsUTF8(myCString), however it is generally more performant to
use UTF16 strings when dealing with atoms.
2. If you need to use the string value of an atom there are now nicer
ways to do so:
nsAtomString(myAtom)
nsDependentAtomString(myAtom)
nsAtomCString(myAtom)
The first two produce nsAStrings, the last one produce an nsACString. So
for example the followin

Tabs and windows, windows and tabs
What I think (new whine at the end):
I don't have a problem with calling them windows, but they look like
independent occurrences of FireFox, and all the knobs ought to behave
like the knobs on two unrelated occurrences of different-and-un-related
programs do. (That's not very clear, I'll try by example.
If I have four "windows" open, one for Solitaire, one for Excel (in case
the boss wanders by), and two windows for Firefox (none of your business

The file-exit, task-bar-close, and x-in-the-corner behaviour should be

Considering adding a serial counter to bugs_activity
I have a requirement for a special-use Bugzilla to provide a complete record
of activity since some earlier point. It would be OK if this included
overlapping events that might be an artifact of using timestamps, but we'd
prefer to avoid overlap, of course.
My first thought is to add an activity_id to table bugs_activity which would
essentially be a transaction counter. An external web service client would
request details about activity that have occurred since event #231234, for
instance.
This almost certainly implies including the creation of

Spell-check idiot-proofing
Some may have noticed that I never brag about my typing skills--there is
a reason for that.
It is especially apparent when I am working with this laptop keyboard.
One of the results is that every character I type may have been intended
to be any of as many as 8 or 9 characters around the one you see. (If
you see an "r", I might have intended to type any from the set
4-5-t-f-d-e-r.)
As long as what I type is a letter, there is a chance the spell-checker
will save me--if I pay attention (which is another problem
entirely--code is not going to help with that).
But if the error-

Drag & Drop in Linux
Hello,
In my extension the user can reorder toolbar buttons/tabs via drag and
drop, works fine in all Mozilla Mail Apps (TB, SM, Postbox) under
Windows, but its temperamental under Ubuntu. I realized the problem was
when i clicked in the center of the button (the button label) it was
behaving erratically but when (carfully) dragging the button from the
area outside the label it behaves as expected (as in Windows). Is it
possible to disable the (built in?) dragging for the labels contained in
the buttons, so that the button itself is dragged, instead?
thanks in advance

Template updates
I've updated some of the MDC templates:
domxref is now smarter about its path generation; it tries lang/
DOM:apiname first, and if that page doesn't exist, it tries lang/DOM/
apiname -- this helps because we switched between using colon and
slash as the separator at some point, so we had a lot of broken links.
In addition, if you specify the API name with ending parentheses (ie,
"apiname()"), the correct link is created ("lang/DOM:apiname"), but
the displayed text is "apiname()" so that it's obvious the described
API is a function.

My basic setup is an application server running 2 webapps, one serving

acting as a webservice API serving up data.
I'm trying to setup the application cache manifest to include all of
the static content from webapp 1, and then use AJAX calls to access
the dynamic content from the webservice API.

The inner workings of JS
There are certain things in JS that invoke a special procedure in the
browser.
window.location.reload() forces the document to refresh.
window.location = "http://newloc.com" redirects the document to a new

Can anyone point me to a place in the Mozilla code repository where
such special actions are scripted?
I am mainly interested in the latter assignment. All other variable
assignments just silently work, but when
you assign a new value to the window.location, then something wakes up
in the codebase and decides to

Thunderbird: Changing Folder context menu per folder
I'm trying to implement a next context-menu item for the Thunderbird
that only appears on specific folders. Basically, I would like to
emulate the behavior of the "Empty Trash" or "Delete" context menu items
that only appear for folders where they apply.
I've been able to hide/show the menu item when the user left-clicks on a
given folder by capturing the "select" event:
window.document.getElementById('folderTree').addEventListener("select",
gTestPlugin.hideShowMenu, false);
but this doesn't work properly if the user only right-clicks on a given
folder without selecting it firs

Email Backups
I am hoping SM has an easy way to backup emails.
Right now I drag a folder to the external HD and that is my backup. One
click and done.
With Netscape I had to drill down to the email folder and drag that
over....couldn't always find it, or even access it later.
How do you backup your SM emails?

Add instrumentation to standard objects
Hi there,
I would like to add some instrumentation to some standard objects like
native string and array to monitor some events like string
concatenation, array insertion? what is the best way to do it without
patching Rhino? does the following code solve the problem?
--------------------------------------------------
ScriptableObject.defineClass(scope, MyPkg.String.class);
ScriptableObject.defineClass(scope, MyPkg.Array.class);

Thanks.

google somehow hijacked firefox and now I just get google as my browser

to be almost impossible to remove google so I consider it a virus!

Next 1.9.3 alpha (this week?)
I'd like to schedule the next 1.9.3 alpha for later this week, with the
following focus:
* Windows D2D support: fix a bunch of issues (Still preffed off by default)
* OOPP: asynchronous stream delivery and topcrash/hang issues
Are there any other upcoming features that would fit in an alpha this week?
(Code-freeze midnight Thurdsay)?
I'd like to push this alpha as a minor update for existing users and have it
available for D2D testing as part of a regular biweekly alpha cycle on trunk.

Comments:
The cookie exceptions interface needs an option to whitelist a domain
but also reject "third-party" cookies for that domain.
This appears to be a serious security flaw in Firefox's cookie handling
that provides no option to block cross-domain ("third party") cookies
when that domain is whitelisted.
For example, un-checking "Accept third-party cookies" prevents
