Is there any way to have Thunder read more than one line or one

Better Software for the Brain
Hi everybody.

is the defacto international language, and dominates the internet,
this applies to accessibility mainly for early grade school children,
dyslexics and everybody in non-English speaking countries. The basic
problem is that it takes years to attain a minimally functional level
of literacy due to the gross disorganization of standard spelling.

Keyboard Navigation Question - Mail Grid Headers
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to provide access to grid headers in a mail
grid via keyboard navigation.
When I read the instructions for a grid in
http://dev.aol.com/dhtml_style_guide#grid
the suggestion is that tabbing into the grid should land on the first
cell, typically the grid header. However, for the email scenario, the
tabbing action should probably land on the row corresponding to the
first unread message or the most recent message (depending on the
listing order).
The instructions then suggest implicitly that arrow key navigation would

that the same version of FireFox on Vista and Windows 7 behaves a

Making it easier to use the keyboard to navigate Fx's pane icon bars (e.g. in prefs dialog)
Hi all,
Firefox's "Preferences", "Add-ons", and "Page Info" dialogs have white
icon-filled section-selection bars ("pane icon bars") at the top. They contain
items like "Main, Tabs, Content, ..., Advanced".
When using the keyboard to navigate the Preferences dialog, it's annoying to get
to the pane icon bar. You have to press Tab or Shift+Tab half a dozen times
sometimes to move the focus to it. (Plus it doesn't show a focus rectangle once
you get to it, but that's a separate bug[1] which was already filed.)
What would be a good solution to this? Letter accesskeys for each?

Mozilla and UUAG compliance
Scott Rippon left the following comment on my blog post about the
high-level accessibility strategy: "How does Firefox rate against the
W3C User Agent Accessibility Guidelines 1.0? Should compliance with
these guidelines be in the strategy? Is Mozilla participating in the
development of the UAAG 2.0?"
Could any of you comment on this?

Proposed Mozilla accessibility strategy
My apologies for not posting this earlier. I have written and published
a proposed high-level strategy for Mozilla-related accessibility efforts:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Accessibility/Strategy
Note that this is not a detailed roadmap for future work, and not a firm
commitment to fund or perform such work. Rather it is intended to
provide a context within within which we can make overall decisions
about where we should concentrate funding and effort. This is especially
important because our resources are very much finite, and we will need
to make decisions about what we sh

Firefox Status Bar
Hi Gregory,
I don't use a screen reader so I'm not sure how the following will work
for you but they are worth trying.
The Organize Status Bar extension for Firefox allows you to hide and
rearrange the items in the Status Bar. A lot add-ons (but not all) have
alternative means for accessing them other than just in the status bar
so you could obviously hide those.

Strange behavior in TB3B2
Hi all.
I'm using JFW 9.0 with TB3B2 and noticed this strange behaviors.
1. When reading messages with Virtual pc cursor, sometimes JAWS
stops reading for 30 seconds more or less, and freezes. After this,
JAWS starts reading again;
2. When editing messages, JAWS seems to loose focus of the editing
window. The title bar is correctly announced, but the active application
returned by ins+q is "explorer.exe", and the window class is... GHOST.
:-) When this happens, TB become unresponsive for some seconds. This
problem seems to occur when the auto-save task takes place. I was

Volunteers Needed to Assess Accessibility of Mozilla Web Site
Hi All,
SpreadFirefox.com will soon be launching a new version of the site (v.
3) with an entirely new layout and we are looking for volunteers to
head over to the staging site and kick the tires (so to speak) and
assess the state of its accessibility.
Although legally blind I am still sighted and have tested what I can
with my abilities and with whatever aids that I use but it would be
nice to send some feedback to the site's developers from others with
conditions that differ from mine including those of you who may be
using screen readers.
I've already commented on Bug 480852

Minefield and menus
Greetings,
=20
Is this the right place to ask questions about Minefield accessibility?
=20
My goal is to set up AT-SPI event handlers so a user can click on menus
and the event handlers can figure out what menu item was clicked. I
have tried everything I can think of and had no luck.
=20
Currently I listen for the event "Gtk:GtkWidget:button-press-event"
which has let me accomplish this goal for all apps I've tried, including
Firefox. For Minefield the source field of the AccessibleEvent object
passed into the handler is not useful. It has no parent. It's roleName

Greetings,

I am working on an AT-SPI accessibility tool. We have targetted a few
applications through the AT-SPI interface, including Firefox and
Minefield. Minefield (v3.0.5) is the first app we've hit where the
extents returned by AccessibilityComponent_getExtents() are smaller than
the actual window on the screen.

Here's the data we're seeing from AT-SPI compared to the underlying X

Security Zone Policy on Windows
Hi all,
i'am wondering why Mozilla 3 use this "policy thing from hell"
Security Zone Policy. One of the reason why i use mozilla is,
that it works out of the box.
The "Security Zone Policy" is IMHO totally without logic, unusable
and worse. So what is the reason for mozilla to use this and
annoy millions users that have now the same problems like they had
with Internet Explorer. Security by obscurity?
Why can't we switch this stuff off from the GUI? Why do we need
a "config_about" for that?
What happens:
I had to changed my Seurity Policy Settings because some

Accessible Firefox Feature Idea: Zoom to Screen Width
I am legally blind, but have enough sight to rily on NoSquint and

Basically, this is the idea (and most of the blog post):
The idea is based on a neat iPhone zoom feature. As I noted yesterday,
if you double tap on a column on a web page in the iPhone browser, it
automatically zooms in to fir the column to the width of the screen.

Specular/Speclenium Release 0.0.8
Hi,
This is to announce a new release of Speclenium, it can be downloaded from:
http://monotonous.org/specular/
There are no changes in this release besides the inclusion of the new
pyia library that supports unlocalized role and state names, this
fixes bugs when using speclenium in a localized environment.
Pyia is a Python MSAA client library. You could get a standalone
version of pyia here:

Focus issues with Flash
Hi all,
There has been an open bug in Firefox for many years which causes
major problems with accessibility in Flash. There doesn't seem to be
any way to focus on a Flash object when the page loads. Focus
requires a click and some users with screen readers don't have mice.
I can't find the bug in bugzilla but found an old discussion here
about this issue:

What's the status of this bug?
Thanks.

Instantiating Firefox A11y on GNOME

Please correct me if I'm wrong (and I hope I am), but I think distros

I'd like to see if we can solve this configuration (?) issue on list as
it seems it may involve a coordinated effort. In particular it would be
great it Brad and folks could connect with Ginn and folks :)

I hope this the right forum for this question.
I am trying to find all the urls in a given web page and since sometimes it
is possible that urls can be present in JavaScript or dynamically generated
by JS, I thought of following
[1] simulate a click on every dom element and see if there is a navigation
event generate
[2] get the url from the navigation event.
[3] cancel the navigation event
I know it is possible to do this in IE and I have done this in past, don't
exactly remember the event or function name though. I would greatly
appreciate if the community can help me in

Event that signals document being loaded?
Greetings,
=20
I've read that Gecko fires events document:load-complete,
document:reload and document:load-stopped so assistive technology apps
can determine when to start examining the AT-SPI tree. Is there an
event fired at the front end of the loading process, that is, after an
action is performed that causes Gecko to start loading new content into
the window?
=20
Some actions are likely to cause a new document to load, like clicking a
hyperlink. But any onclick handler could decide to load a new document.
What is the best way for an assistive app to know: "a new document is

Screen Readers + Firefox Popups Focus
Hi all and happy new year.
I'm considering adding Answers.com Tips to some web pages but I need
some information on how screen readers handle popups in Firefox 3. A
popup box appears with the definition of a word that has been double
clicked.
I'm assuming that the popup window (if the popup is allowed by the
user) will be focused for visitors using screen readers and that there
wouldn't be any issues with the screen reader reading the text in the
popup window, but I'm unsure of how screen readers react when closing
the popup.
Now for sighted people, they can click on a close button

Fw: nsIDOMWindow::GetDocument() returning null on FF3

Dear all,
Is it possible that this attribute returns null even though nothing =
wrong is reported by the return error code?
NS_FAILED() returns 0.
This situation never arosed on FF2 browser, but its starting to happen =

It seems that DOM Window Objects on FF3 all expose nsIDOMWindow2 =

I am accessing GetDocument() through a nsIDOMWindow* pointer.=20
Can anyone please kindly help me on this?

Proposal to expose calendar view information to screen readers
Hi there!
At
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Accessibility/CalendarExposure,
I've started a proposal to expose calendar view information such as the
one in the Lightning extension for Thunderbird, to assistive
technologies such as screen readers.
Since there is not much to go on in terms of previous implementations,
we're basically free to set the standard here, or as some would say who
have fought calendaring apps in the past, to finally set *a* standard.
It is hoped that this proposal, once formulated out and implemented in
Lightning, will also become part of other web-based ca

How to determine topmost?
Greetings,
=20
I am working on this problem: the user hovers the mouse over a web page
displayed in Firefox and presses F8. What is the topmost object under
the mouse? To put it another way, if the user clicked the mouse exactly
where it is hovering, which object would receive the click event?
=20
To get concrete, the web page is http://www.weather.com and the mouse is
hovering over the radio button "Site" in the The Weather Channel search
box near the top of the web page. My current algorithm yields three
items as being contenders for this topmost item:

Detailed progress report for Mozilla grant to NVDA
Hi all,
It is drawing towards the end of the year for which the Mozilla
Foundation provided a grant to NV Access to employ me to work full time
on NVDA. This post examines the grant goals and summarises our progress
for each goal:
http://www.nvda-project.org/blog/MozillaGrantDec2007ProgressReport
Be warned that this is quite a long read! :)
There are probably a few more links to be added to the referenced
"Recognition" page. I will probably provide a more detailed summary of
download statistics for NVDA 0.6p2 in a subsequent post.

No. I tried. I implemented a keyboard listener for the F8 key which
gets the current mouse coordinates and tries to figure out the object
under the mouse.
My current test web page is http://www.weather.com. The object I'm
trying to identify is the "Site" radio button in "The Weather Channel"

click is an action, but clicking does not work
Greetings,
=20
This email is about gmail.com, Google's email website. If you login to
a Gmail account you'll see what looks like a link on the far left, under
the Gmail logo: Compose Mail. If you click on that link with your mouse
it will switch you into composition mode.
=20
Using at-spi accessibility, when we dump the "Compose Mail" node and
it's direct parent (see below), we see that "Compose Mail" is text
inside a <span>, not inside an <a> as expected. I verified this with
Firebug. You can also see that at-spi reports that 'click' is an action
on the "Compose Mail" node. Bu

I've got an application that uses at-spi 1.22.1 on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy

user clicks the left-mouse-button on a GUI object my application can
identify/understand the object that was clicked.

For Gtk applications, I've had pretty good success listening for the

Fw: Screen reader survey
WebAIM is conducting a survey of screen reader users -

Web accessibility experts often say something like, "Screen reader

many of these recommendations are based on personal preference or

readers. The fact is that there is little data about screen reader
usage to back up these recommendations.
This survey will ask screen reader users about their usage and
preferences. If you are a

AccessibleEditableText_setTextContents not working

When we look at Firefox 3.0.1 through the at-spi interface, the main

role "entry" and 4 interfaces:

When we apply the AccessibleEditableText interface, in particular the
routine AccessibleEditableText_setTextContents, the text in the box is
