OOPP and Responsiveness

OOPP is coming together nicely and as we move from finding basic problems like crashes and hangs, I'd like for us to take a look at little look at performance. We don't have a clear way to compare performance between Firefox 3.6 and the 1.9.3a3pre nightlies, for example, when using plugins, but if there's any perceived change in responsiveness I would like your help in calling it out. Just to remind you, OOPP works in Windows and Linux trunk nightlies. So far our testing has involved trying out sites with popular plugins to see if they crash and checking what the user interaction i

Next 1.9.3 alpha (this week?)

I'd like to schedule the next 1.9.3 alpha for later this week, with the following focus: * Windows D2D support: fix a bunch of issues (Still preffed off by default) * OOPP: asynchronous stream delivery and topcrash/hang issues Are there any other upcoming features that would fit in an alpha this week? (Code-freeze midnight Thurdsay)? I'd like to push this alpha as a minor update for existing users and have it available for D2D testing as part of a regular biweekly alpha cycle on trunk. --BDS

Mozilla Developer Preview (Gecko 1.9.3a2) available for download

A Mozilla Developer Preview is now available for download. This is the second pre-release version of the Gecko 1.9.3 platform, which forms the core of Firefox and other Mozilla projects. Out-of-Process Plugins The main feature of this release is out-of-process plugins: on Windows and Linux, plugins such as Flash and Silverlight run in a separate process from the browser. If a plugin crashes it will not crash the browser, and unresponsive plugins are automatically restarted. (Note that we are working on this for Macs as well, but is not part of this preview release.) Gecko - Firefox - security/feature updates

Hi, I almost missed the information about the plan to ship "features" in patch level updates of Firefox instead only security stability stuff. As this decision does not only affect Firefox within the most Linux distributions I'm raising it in this more general group. Many Linux distributions are currently shipping Firefox as a combination of xulrunner and firefox for various reasons. The important thing is that on Linux quite some applications use xulrunner (or only its gtk embedding widget). With the security and stability patch level updates that usually worked quite well. Wit

Removing restriction on mozilla-central

Hi, We're down to 26 code-related blockers for mozilla1.9.2/firefox3.6, the = lion's share of which are in JavaScript. I'd like to propose that we = lift the restriction on mozilla-central, returning us to a state where = any reviewed patch can be landed, to allow many excellent pieces of = technology (out-of-process plugins, Direct 2D, Web GL, Tab Matches in = Awesomebar) to start landing and baking for a future release. If we do this, our sheriffs will need to be EXTRA vigilant in watching = for test and build failures, and quite aggressive about backing out = anything that's ca

draft thunderbird 3.1 plan

[Note that followups have been aimed at dev-apps-thunderbird] In general, 3.1 wants to be a very light platform-update / fixup release with very little product-y aspect to it. After some discussion with davida and clarkbw, we'd like to push forward with the feature roadmaps fairly quickly, in the interest of prepping for the post 3.1 work. We'll start driving that separately shortly. In the meantime, my suggestion for folks doing code work is to work on polishing off rough edges from 3.0, along with landing small, scoped features that were intended to make 3.0 but didn't.

Tests with JIT disabled?

I'm wondering if the Firefox tests are run with JIT enabled always? I guess that Firebug somehow causes the JIT not to be running, so code running while Firebug is active will be less tested than normal path code unless the Firefox tests are run with JIT disabled as well as enabled. jjb

Platform improvements for Firebug in 1.9.3, Firefox 3.7

The Firebug team would like to lobby for help on getting three bug fixes into Firefox 3.7: 1) Bug 449464 - Implement jsdICompilationUnit to extend jsd to include information on the compilation unit structure. (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449464) Big performance, code cleanup gains; adds support for all dynamic JS code. 2) Bug 342715 - Need an API to allow extensions to hook "document load started" events (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=342715) Big code clean up gains, much less voodoo, big plus for Chromebug too. 3) Bug 515946 - jsd: Ad

Re: Idea for getting a better total crashes per day baseline

I've proposed this idea before, and believe that I even filed a bug on it, but generally agree that the time to submit data about stability is when we specifically ask users if they want to send us that data (ie: the crash reporter). There are several pieces of data we can send along with a crash that are not personally identifiable (though some are what's considered potentially personally identifiable): - time since last crash - total number of crashes experienced - total number of crashes experienced in last 10 minutes, hour, 12 hours and 24 hours - crash report UUID

Landing multi-process plugins in mozilla-central (Tuesday)

The electrolysis tree is completely green and we think we've resolved all the remaining code blockers to land out-of-process plugins (OOPP) into mozilla-central. Unless I will be interfering with Firefox 3.6/1.9.2 work, I'd like to do this tomorrow morning (Tuesday). This means the tree will probably be closed/restricted for at least a couple hours. Please let me know if there are pending landings for 3.6 which would be delayed by closing mozilla-central tomorrow morning. * Because the electrolysis branch contains both plugin and tab work, this will not be a straight up merge from e1
