SpiderMonkey JS engine type
Hi.
I am implementing SpiderMonkey JS engine based parser.
JavaScript is dynamic, weakly typed language.
But is it possible to know JavaScript function, function parameters,
variable types using SpiderMonkey?
Example:
function doSomething (Date)
{
try
{
var Res = check(Date);
switch (Res)
{
case 1 :
return (true);
break;
case 0:
return (false);
break;
case -1:
return (false);
break;
default:
var ErrMsg = "Wrong date" + Date;
return report(ErrMsg);
break;
}
}
catch (err)
{

Marking and tracking variables
Hello,
I am working on a project where we need to mark some sensitive
information in JavaScript and track these markers through various
operations, like assignments, concatenations, etc.
Consider the following example:
var a = 'a';
var b = new String('b');
b.marker = 1;
var c = 'c';
var d = a + b + c;
Is it possible to pass the marker through concatenation and assignment
op so that it will appear at variable d? As far as I know there is no
way to overload + operator in JavaScript? Is it correct?
Is there any possible way to do it without modifying SpideMonkey's
source cod

Lazy resolving of prototype property
Hello,
I am trying to create a glue layer between SpiderMonkey and 3rd party
DOM implementation, using resolve hooks for lazy definition of DOM
objects and properties.
Seems I cannot understand well what to do in case when a new DOM
object is constructed, like this:
var pic = new window.Image();
In this case a resolve hook is called for 'Image' object, asking to
resolve 'prototype' property. At this point I do not understand how to
resolve. I have tried everything but each time I get exception:
{TypeError: Image is not a constructor}
Please help,
Alex Y.

Operator Overloading in JavaScript
I'm wondering whats the latest with support for operator overloading
in JavaScript, especially being able to overload operators for custom
objects via spidermonkey. I need a way to support operations like
adding elements between corresponding elements of two vectors for
example, and being able to write the javascript as "a + b" as opposed
to writing a for loop would be way simpler. Can anyone shed some light
on if this is currently doable?
I'm also open to suggestions about other embedded languages that could
support operator overloading easily. JavaScript was my first choice,

JSEXT version 1.0 is out! (server-side js)
If you haven't heard about jsext, it is one of 23 projects mentioned
on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server-side_JavaScript . What makes
this one stand out is the way it connects with underlying libraries
on
the host: Jsext automatically parses C header files and links to
dynamic libraries to provide direct access to them from JavaScript.
That simplifies module writing _a lot_. For example, the project
includes an SMTP client which supports attachments, international
characters in message and address, multiple recipients, cc, bcc (217
lines + 92 lines of documentation), an FTP client

Here's some simple test code:

fp->scopeChain == fp->varobj assert firing
I'm upgrading my application which embeds SpiderMonkey to the current
(trunk) js engine (libmozjs) from something I had pulled about a year
or so ago. Up until the upgrade, things had been working fine -- I
could parse and execute scripts embedded in my documents, with no
apparent problems.
In upgrading, one of the things I needed to do was compile with
JS_THREADSAFE on, and wrap most calls to the JS API with either
JSAutoRequest or JS_StartRequest/JS_EndRequest blocks. This is because
I was getting asserts (CHECK_REQUEST is the macro I believe). I've

UIDL: User Interface Description Language.
Hi all,
the initial release of a new open source project, UIDL, has just been
released through Google code at http://code.google.com/p/uidl/.
UIDL is an acronym for User Interface Description Language. The goal of the
project is to create support for a universal client which allows for the
display of rich user interfaces. This client includes a Rhino JavaScript
interpreter and downloads scripts containing the UI code from a server (as
per HTML for a browser but for complex UIs).
The main features of a UIDL page are the ability to create complex user

I'm trying to come up with a routine in my client C++ code (using
Spidermonkey) that determines whether a string is a valid JavaScript
identifier, and also not a keyword, so that I can generate code with
properties, using the dot notation whenever possible, and the square-
bracket notation otherwise (e.g. MyObject.foo vs. MyObject["foo bar"]
or MyObject["var"]).
I've found that the js_MapKeywords function is exported as a "friend,"
so I can use that to build a set of keywords, and search it as
needed. But I haven't found a similar way to determine whether a
string is a valid identi

Sandboxing Javascript code
I'm looking at the possibility of using Spidermonkey in a situation
where the Javascript code to be run is untrusted and therefore has to be
sandboxed: no matter what it does, the calling process has to continue
functioning normally; and wondering can Spidermonkey provide that.
In particular, from the readme: "The interpreter executes the bytecode
of top-level scripts, and calls itself indirectly to interpret function
bodies (which are also scripts)." If I understand correctly, that means
each Javascript function call uses native machine stack, so infinite

Dynamic addition of property
For an application that we are building, on startup we initialize all
the JS classes we need (using JS_InitClass with info containing the
properties and functions)
Whenever a script containing the properties already defined using
JS_InitClass is evaluated, the corresponding getproperty stubs that
were registered are called to evaluate the script.
Now there is an issue faced to evaluate a NEW property of a class that
has not yet been defined using JS_initclass. We understand that this
can be achieved using JS_ResolveStub.
For eg. Myobject.newproperty = 10; //Where newproperty ha

Memory Issues in Spidermonkey
Hi
In our application we are using spidermonkey compiled with threadsafe
option. We have one single runtime which is shared among all requests
while for each request we are creating a new context and destroying it
using JS_DestroyContextNoGC. The GC is running as a background thread
which activates after every 5 secs.
Now one thing that I observed is that if my script creates lot of new
objects then the memory of the process increases and this memory does
not come down even after GC is run. The problem is in case of
multiuser scenario, in which case there is considerable increase

Case-Insensitve properties
I apologise if this has already been covered long ago, but my google-
fu just wasn't up to the task of ferretting out the answer.
How can I make the properties of an object case insensitive? I'm
trying to mimic the headers from HTTP where content-type is equivalent
to CONTENT-TYPE. So far, I've implemented my own enumerate and resolve
methods, which create uppercase versions of the properties. Presumably
I should also implement getProperty.
Or is there a simpler way?

A cool new way to search Google, Yahoo, and many others with Netscape
Hello everyone,
We've developed a new search feature for the Netscape browser. You can
see a short demo of us using this on Google here:
http://www.visual-search.net/VideoDemonstrations/NetscapeWebDemo/NetscapeWebDemo.html
You can download the extension on this page:

What is joined object in ECMA-262
Hi, all:
I'm sorry because I don't know whether here is the right place to
discuss it. We are talking about closure in
javascript, and we have some questions about ECMA-262 3rd edition:
What is joined function object(ecma-262 13.1)?
The spec have given a example:
function A() {
function B(x) { return x*x }
return B
}
var b1 = A();
var b2 = A();
Spec says: b1 and b2 can be joined, and implementation may make b1 and
b2 the same object because [[scope]] of them have no difference.
Two call of A() will produce a function from the same FunctionBody, so
they are equate

Wrong XML output in Rhino + E4X
Hello folks,
I am stuck with this code in Rhino 1.6 release 5 2006 11 18:
js> var x = 'John Doe';
js> var y = <a><b c=""/>{x}</a>;
js> y
<a>
<b c=""/>
"John Doe"
</a>
As you can see XML output contains unexpected quotes around the
literal 'John Doe'...
It seems Rhino does not correctly handle the self closing tag.
That is if I rewrite the stuff to looks like the following then it
works (note the closing tag '</b>')
js> var x = 'John Doe';
js> var y = <a><b c=""></b>{x}</a>;
js> y
<a>
<b c=""/>
John Doe
</a>
Am I doing something wrong (i.e. bad syntax)?

Function declaration as last expression in a script
Hi,
I'm using Rhino 1.5r4 (bundled with Cocoon). For this script:
foo = function() {};
foo;
org.mozilla.javascript.Script'exec() returns a function object. But
for this script:
function() {};
it returns 'undefined'.
Why is that? Is it a bug? If the function declaration is an expression
and yields a value that can be assigned to foo in the first script, why
doesn't the second script return that value as the last expression
evaluated?
thx-a-lot,
Mark

Tracking memory references in Rhino
Hello,
is there a way to track referenced objects in scripts? I have scopes
that run for a long time working on an increasing number of objects but
releasing the references underway - and need to know about it since
there are critical resources attached to these objects. So is there a
way to know that a object isn't referenced by the JS code anymore?
Thanks for your help,

passing java.lang.Boolean as a parameter to java method in Rhino
I've got a problem when passing Boolean taken from java object to java

Please, consider the following short example code.

is ok.

I've noticed many changes in the source files at mozilla/js/src. Are these
stable, or is there a recommended set of patches to apply since 1.5?
Thanks.

Accessing static Java member vars from JS
I have a java class that defines some static member vars and would like
to access them from within JavaScript. How do I add the class into the
scope?
I currently have Java classes as below. An instance of FooMatic is
added to the scope via 'ScriptableObject.putProperty(scope,
"fooMachine", Context.javaToJS(new FooMatic(), scope));". Within
JavaScript I have 'var foo = fooMachine.getFoo();' and would like to
compare foo.type against Foo.someValue1 and Foo.someValue2.
What is the correct syntax in JScript to access the static members?
Do I need to load the Foo class into the scope?

I have a newbie question and could not find any related answer.
This is working:
I'm defining a new function using C, let's say function "myfunc", that
has a C function associated with it, let's say c_myfunc. When "myfunc"

This is what I wanted:
I would like to know the name of the function that called c_myfunc, in
this specific case, I would like to retrieve from inside the c_myfunc
the name "myfunc". I need this because I need to register several script
functions to just one C function, and then, from there de

Creating a native class than inherits from Array
I've created many native classes - all of them providing all their own
functionality. I'd *like* to create a class that inherits from Array - then adds
a few methods of it's to the derived class.
I'm not going to list all the various imaginative ways I've tried to do this
(unsuccessfully) - however the kind of solution I'm after would be :
I would have thought creating the prototype would be analogous to what I'd do in
a JS script:
proto = new Array
myCls.prototype = proto
myCls.prototype.myFn1= function() {}
etc
To my mind this would be something like:

IE 6.0 ignores screenX (Y) parameters in window.open(...)? Firefox not.
Hi,
See the following URL for the concerned page:

Instance Handling
Hi!
We're using Spidermonkey inside an ActiveX. For each file we open, we
create a new runtime instance and publish our custom js classes to the
runtime. But somehow if the activeX gets loaded by one process and you
open a second file, the first one stops working because the runtime
engine doesn't know anymore about our custom classes, just the second
file does. We've checked it twice and there're definitely *two* runtime
instances. If you create two processes, each using the activeX, it
works as expected.
So my question, is there a specific issue with ActiveX and Instance

Rhino/Java - terminating script execution without affecting executing thread
Hello, I am working on embedding rhino within a java server application
that will allow js functions to override default behavior of objects.
Each js execution will need to execute under its own thread, and I
would love to be able to use a thread pool (ala ThreadPoolExecutor) to
reuse the threads for multiple script executions. Also, a major
requirement is being able to control a script's execution to avoid
things like infinite loops that would hog CPU time/threads.
So the crux of the issue is can I prematurely terminate a script's
execution without affecting the life cycle of the t
