Why is __STRICT_ANSI__ set?
Greetings!
In prinet.h, __STRICT_ANSI__ is forced true. Does anyone know why? This is
causing us downstream build problems (related to 64-bit typedefs) on Fedora

compiler).
Thanks in advance,

New NSPR module owner: Nelson Bolyard
I'm pleased to announce that Nelson Bolyard has accepted my
invitation to be an NSPR module owner, helping Darin Fisher,
Chris Seawood, and me maintain and enhance NSPR.
Nelson is a core NSS developer and "Mr. SSL" in the Mozilla
project. He knows NSPR very well, partly because NSS uses
NSPR heavily (for porting and SSL I/O layering), and partly
because Sun's NSS team is responsible for maintaining NSPR
for Sun's NSPR-based products. I look forward to working
with Nelson on making NSPR better.

[ADMIN] mozilla-nspr is moving!
It should be no secret these days that the Mozilla Foundation and its related projects are no longer a pet project of Netscape, yet the newsgroups we are using for public discussions still bear the Netscape name. We've been planning for years to move from netscape.public.mozilla.* to just mozilla.*, and the time has finally come!
In August, we announced a partnership with Giganews Newsgroups (http://www.giganews.com/) to provide NNTP services for our news.mozilla.org domain. It's taken a few months of planning to make it happen, but we're now in the process of moving all of those newsgrou

There used to be a miniNSPR project (or so I've been told). I'm interested
in only using those parts of NSPR that are neccesary for supporting

Does anyone know the usage of nspr_use_zone_allocator
Hi,experts,
Who knows the usage of nspr_use_zone_allocator. In
http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/nsprpub/pr/src/malloc/prmem.c#186
PR_InitZones() tries to load symbol "nspr_use_zone_allocator" which is
not defined anywhere. This will chose Mozilla to load many shared
libraries which will increase Mozilla startup time.
I think this option is not necessary. Can anyone tell me what is it
used for?

Timer problems
I have implemented a timer that goes off every 60 seconds:
void init()
{
PR_QueueJob_Timer(threadPool, PR_SecondsToInterval(60), jobHandler, this,

}
void jobHandler()
{
// <do some work here that according to logs doesn't fail>
// call me again in one minute
PR_QueueJob_Timer(threadPool, PR_SecondsToInterval(60), jobHandler, this,

This works for a while, then the timer stops fireing. The thread pool size
is 20, but I'm not sure if that matters.
Thanks for any insights!

PR_Send aborts process with _PR_InvalidInt assertion
Hi,
I'm getting an infrequent program abort from a PR_Send call that I'd
like to catch or proactively prevent. Here are the parameter types for
the call:
PRFileDesc* clientSocket;

messageLength is 4 chars that get decoded into an unsigned int by the

It works beautifully 99% of the time, but 1% of the time I get:

Hastable memory leak
Hi,
This fragment (a bit simplified) leaks memory each time I run it. It uses

PR_CreateProcess won't run script on Windows :-)
Well, the Linux case was solved. On windows, I use the exact same code base.
If I feed PR_CreateProcess with an exe or bat file, it works fine.
However, if I feed PR_CreateProcess with an "MSI" file, it won't start it. I
get error -5994 (UNKNOWN)
If I run the MSI file directly from the command line or the file explorer,
it starts.
I have tried this on Win98 and WinXP - same thing.

Problems with statically linked NSPR
I have make'ed a static version of NSPR (got three *.a files) on Linux.
However, when I link to my application using "g++ -static", I get lots of
linker errors.
1) For instance:
prnetdb.c:1064: Using 'gethostbyaddr_r' in statically linked applications
requires at runtime the shared libraries from the glibc version used for
linking.
Anyone know that that means? Yes, I do link with nsl.
2) I also get undefined reference errors to the pthread_** calls. Which
library must be included to fix that?
Thanks for any info and sorry about my newbieness :-)

PR_CreateProcess won't run script on Linux
I have a PR_CreateProcess call that calls a sh script with executable flag
on. On Windows a bat file is called, and that works fine.
On Linux, however, running the sh script doesn't seem to work. There is no
errors returned.
What I do is basically:
PRProcess* prc = PR_CreateProcess("/path/to/script.sh", argv, argp, NULL);
PR_DetatchProcess(prc);
// I assume the script keeps running here, since I did detatch?
However, the script doesn't actually run. I have even hard coded the path to
the script, but it made no difference.
Any suggestions?

TCP/IP client: Need some guidance
Hi there. I had great success using NSPR until now - great work!
At this point, however, I'm stuck and I can't figure out how to do from the
documentation. It would be great if anyone could provide some guidance.
What I need is actually a rather simple function (at least conceptually):
1. The function signature would be something like "char* sendData(char*
serverAddress, int port, char* data)"
2. The function should connect to the "server:port" and send the data, then
receive and return a reply.
I think the sending / receiving is under control.
My trouble is:

NSPR Reference
I have just started/created a NSPR Reference doc, (mostly-mock-up so
far) on devmo (http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/NSPR_API_Reference)
My initial thought is to take a bit of advantage of the wiki, and
expand/re-format (slightly) the reference, rather than try an exact (or
near-exact) pull from the current document.
My thought is to remove the "Ordered" Read the current document exposes
(via next/prev) links. And go a bit more abstract with the sections.
As in, NSPR Types would simply (from the Table of Contents page) tell
(briefly) what is in the section, the NSPR Typ

blocking IO on windows
Hi!
One of my engineers run into a problem with blocking IO on windows and
after some debugging I realized that I need some help with it.
The problem is caused by calling PR_Recv() in a loop with a timeout
(30 seconds). In our case, we don't have any data in the socket and
the first call returns PR_IO_TIMEOUT_ERROR. Then the second and all
subsequent calls fail with PR_IO_PENDING error because "io_pending"
flag is set true.
I debugged the code and figured out that we have the following
sequence of events:
-- First call to PR_Recv()
_PR_MD_RECV
io_pending = true

Can this be done in NSPR? I have read through the docs but couldn't find

PR_Recv - ambiguous docs and samples
Does PR_Recv block until the requested number of bytes are read, or can the
return value be less than that (i.e. partial read, like the standard socket

The documentation indicates blocking, while at least one of the examples
indicate that you must call PR_Recv in a loop until the requested number of
bytes are received.

I have some questions about the threads in NSPR. Need your help.
Let me take the Redhat(Linux Kernel 2.4) on x86 as the example
platform. This platform provides the LinuxThread(pthread).
1. What's the purpose and difference of User/System Thread? From the
implementation(pthreads/ptthread.c), it seems that the difference
only exists on the PR_Cleanup call. Is it the only difference?
By the way, Is System thread means a Kernel thread, and User
thread means a user-level thread like pthread? What's the real
meaning of them? Or is there some reference about them?

How does PR_Interrupt() work?

How is this control point arranged? Could someone give me an example?

NSPR 4.6 Release Plan
I plan to release NSPR 4.6 in the next two
or three weeks. It will be based on the
current NSPR trunk. It will be the basis
for the upcoming NSS 3.10 release.
I've already reviewed all the open NSPR bugs
and closed quite a few of them. In the remaining
time, I intend to review contributed new functions
PL_strlcpy and PR_asprintf, and a new variant
of PR_snprintf that returns the correct character
count.
I won't address UNICODE file pathnames support
or Windows CE port in this release.
If you have anything straightforward you want to
see in NSPR 4.6, please let me know.
