Has anyone seen Mozilla (mozilla-bin) leak big time like 600 MB and growing?
Weird, this morning I went AFK for like 10 hours (Xscreensaver running)
and came back. I noticed my Linux workstation (Debian; Kernel 2.6.14-K7)
was frozen, but still responding slowly.
I checked top (took a while) and noticed mozilla-bin was hogging over
600 MB and growing. I had to kill its process to regain control over my
computer. Has anyone seen this big leak before?
I know Firefox and Mozilla has leak problems, but nothing like this. Or
does it exist? I remember I was on worth1000.com looking and rating each

[ADMIN] mozilla-performance is moving!
It should be no secret these days that the Mozilla Foundation and its related projects are no longer a pet project of Netscape, yet the newsgroups we are using for public discussions still bear the Netscape name. We've been planning for years to move from netscape.public.mozilla.* to just mozilla.*, and the time has finally come!
In August, we announced a partnership with Giganews Newsgroups (http://www.giganews.com/) to provide NNTP services for our news.mozilla.org domain. It's taken a few months of planning to make it happen, but we're now in the process of moving all of those newsgrou

Needed Performance Feature
While using Windows OS, when you minimize Internet Explorer, you should
be able to notice that a large amount of memory is moved from the RAM to
somewhere else (I would have assumed page file, but that doesn't seem to be
the location). And once you maximize IE again, it moves the data right back
to the RAM almost instantly. Mozilla doesn't noticably do anything of the
sort.
Also, it would be great if Mozilla could be almost completely paused
while minimized. Then, it won't consume unnecessary CPU when complex sites
are loaded.

Thunderbird sluggish
IS TB sluggish for anyone else? I've compacted the inboxes, but it's
still really sluggish. And by sluggish, I mean a lot of things:
Often when it's screen is behind others on my desktop, when I click on
its tab in the taskbar, it can take a minute to come to the front.
Often when it is at the front, when I click on a different mailbox in
the left pane, it will take a minute to change to that mailbox.
Sometimes when writing an email, the displayed text is waay behind my
typing (and I'm a hunt'n'peck guy).
No other programs exhibit this behavior, though to be careful, I bought

a problem about shared library dependenice
Hi,
I'm trying to find out unnecessary shared library dependencies by using
following command: ldd -r -u some-mozilla-shared-library on solaris 10
I find some shared libraries uses some unnecessary libraries. E.g.
ldd -r -u libmozjs.so reports that /usr/lib/libdl.so.1 is an unused
object.
this library doesn't appear in the command line (e.g. no -ldl option).
Do anyone know why libmozjs.so depends on this shared library?
Thanks

PERFORMANCE <textarea>'s combos (ultra-low priority)
Hi all,
The key-combos CTRL+(left/right arrows) don't work at the same speed.
It's funny to see that CTRL+left arrow is faster than CTRL+right arrow
in a <textarea> in FireFox/Linux/kde3.4.
I tested it on a text and CTRL+right needs 1:47, but CTRL+left needs
only 0:40!! About twice faster!! ;-)
Does anybody have experienced the same issue?

Hi,

problem and is there a way to speed up the rendering process? Could it be cr/lf

Hard drive usage ... :)
On a laptop, I really notice how much Mozilla uses the drive. It's still
quite sluggish to startup the first time.
I can quantify that now: task manager shows that Mozilla reads 13MB from
the hard disk.
Starting IE reads 1kB :) yes I know that is not a fair comparison ...

Speed - Firefox loading
Hi.
I have a page where I'm loading 10000 records from a database into a
WEB-page.
When I'm using FF to load the page it takes about 130 seconds for the 10000

When I choose only load 2500 records it takes only 10 seconds, (it is the
same data and I've taken then first from the start, afterward from the
middle and at last from the end, no difference it takes 10 seconds).
When I use IE it takes about 20 seconds for the 10000 record and about 5
seconds for the 2500 records.

Moz 1.8 performance dramatically improved
I must say, the performance of Moz 1.8 Beta 1 over Moz 1.7.2 is really
dramatic. It was getting to the point where Moz 1.7x was truly unusable.
Is the Moz 1.8 trunk identical to the FF 1.1 trunk? I have no idea what
they have done to make this app work better but it will really put a
smile on your face. If you are having problems with Moz 1.7x slowness,

painfully slow redraws with Moz, and all of these problems seemingly

Memory usage
It appears there is a memory leak somewhere. I had 2 firefox windows (1

Closing some windows, including 1 or 2 with big web-accessed pdf files,
to a point where only about 10 tabs were open in 1 windows didn't
decrease it much. Exiting from the process, and re-launching it,
decreased total memory usage by about 320MB. If i were to guess, it
would be PDF plug-in, but it could also be something more generic. The
tabs in the first window that stayed thruout were open for about a month.

javascript mouse event performance
Hello
I am developing a web page. How should I go about troubleshooting poor
javascript performance in Mozilla (1.7.3)? I think the problem is
related to frequent code execution triggered by onmousemoves. Mozilla
is struggling. (IE is doing fine by comparison.) The browser is
running in XP.
The status bar is often showing "waiting for 192.168.1.111" after the
page is (apparently) loaded. The code is dealing with images (all
pre-loaded), and one guess is that maybe Mozilla is making additional
unnecessary fileserver requests.
Hope someone can give me some direction.

Animated gifs in background tabs
Hi there,
I experience firefox to use up to 70% of my CPU-time while doing just
nothing, well almoust nothing. I found this problem, when having several

They make havy use of animated gifs, to offer their service free. So now it
seems reasonable that these gifs use up CPU-time while they are being
displayed. But if I backgroud all the tabs containing these gifs, firefox
still consumes a lot of CPU-time.
So, is the animation of gifs suspended when a tab is backgrounded? Is there

Possible performance optimization in image decoding
Something to think about:
Looking aroung in imgContainerGIF.cpp, I saw that there are two ways to set
image data in gfxImageFrame(->mImage):
* SetImageData with an allocated and filled array of bytes
* GetImageData to get pointer to image buffer itself and directly set
the bytes.
The first needs an allocated buffer, and memcpy's the data from this
allocated buffer to the image buffer.
So, in the image decoders (such as GIF), instead of using
SetImageData(..., allocated array of bytes, ...), we could use
GetImageData to get the pointer to the image buffer itself, and directly

Is there any setting or something that could help me?

Performance characteristics of XMLHttpRequest
All,
First of all, apologies in advance if cross-posting this causes any trouble.
The traffic on this group seems light (with lots of spam :( ) so I thought
I'd check here anyhow.
An enterprise web application we have built depends on the usage of POST
XMLHttpRequest for in-place updating. We typically use the request object in
synchronous mode, but my measurements indicate little difference with
asynchronous mode either.
I'm finding that between machines, small requests (typically sending 10
bytes, retreiving 50 bytes) take of the order of 80 to 300 milliseconds to
complete, t

Remaining performance issue - hard drive usage
Hi all,
I've been impressed with speed improvements on Mozilla/Firefox. Stunning
results for an entirely custom set of widgets, and of course Gecko is
great :)
However, it does make heavy use of the hard disk, which makes it still
seem a bit sluggish to start on machines with slow disks, e.g. laptops.
Does anyone think this can be improved?
Thanks

- I have to wait, while typing the url, the letters appear after parts
of a second
- hitting 'compose' in the newsgroup reader takes about 17 seconds to
display the compose form
- clicking to another tab needs about 2 seconds to display new content

Disable hotkeys/shortcut keys F11, F12?
How to?
I want to use compose sequences, which work in text windows or the
command line in Linux, but if I invoke them in Mozilla they die because
Mozilla reserves F11 and F12 for other purposes (full screen etc.)
Where do I go to disable these? Ive searched Google and prefs.js, there
is no evidence there of these.

the server don't support pipelining (when it don't send his response) the

With Mozilla Firefox the download-times are ok, but with Internet

So why is http://www.ttc-ried.com with IE so slow?
The main difference of the configuriation of the two hosters is, that

Hello. I'm using Firefox 0.9.2 in Win2k. The browser runs smoothly all

Help needed pinning down "dhtml" performance issue (only JS knowledge needed)
See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212831#c54 for details. In
short, we're spending a lot of time in JS code on that page. I don't know
enough about the JS engine (and it has too much recursive stuff going on) to
usefully apply jprof to that end of things.
So what's needed is someone to read the JS on that page, figure out what calls
what, and try to produce a minimal-ish testcase that still shows that much time
taken up in the JS, or at least locate the parts of the three functions involved
that cause the performance problems...
Any help would be much apprecia

"dhtml" performance
There was a style system checkin on August 9 that should help out the

At the same time, it could conceivably lead to "frame dropping" issues (I'm

Any testing people can do of August 10 or later trunk builds would be much

How to measure Mozilla performance?
How does one measure Mozilla browser performance in a Linux environment?
In theory, tweaking the compiler switches in a Mozilla build results in
improved performance. Rather than take it on faith that this or that
compiler switch is a benefit, I want to benchmark the results of a given
build to see if there really was an improvment.
Occasionally the Mozilla developers will state that performance has been
improved by x percent in a given version, so presumably there is a way to
benchmark browser performance.
Anyone know how this is done? Thanks.

course work. It would be great to have you in. Would you like to
participate?
Thank you.

Problems with IMPORT of Folders
I am coming from MS OE 6.x and the import does not pick up the Inbox and
the Sent either from OE.
The boxes are there but they are EMPTY. Yet, when I go back to OE I see
many messages in both.
When I drill down in Mozilla I can even see the inbox and the Sentbox
with the content.
But HOW do I get them to show up???

Newsgroups disappeared!
I had spent quite some time to select (first download the thousands of
newsgroups) those that I wanted. All was fine for a number of days.
To-day all of them are gone and I had to setit all up with a lot of
wasted time.
Why does this happen?

running . I had Imported all the folders from OE and they did import,
but there no messages in Sent (even though in OE there are many, many
sent messages) Same for the Inbox. The box is there but nothing in it.

reflow question/suggestion
Hello All,
I am working on trying to improve the load time of a page with a large
table on it (by changing the layout code in mozilla). I am looking at the
layout code, but I suspect there might be a way to optimize the reflow code
to make this page load faster. I do not know enough about that code to be
sure, hence this post.
My general understanding is that mozilla will periodically reflow the
page as it is being loaded from the network. I know that there is a preference
you can set to determine how long mozilla waits before the first reflow, but
I do not know what determ

page-loader perl cgi script
I am trying to get the page-loader Perl cgi script (downloaded from the
Mozilla CVS under "mozilla/tools/page-loader/") to run on a machine here
to get some results of page-loading times to compare Mozilla Seamonkey
and Firefox.
I followed the README.txt in that dir and installed all relevant perl
modules:
LWP::UserAgent, version: 2.003
SQL::Statement, version: 1.005
Text::CSV_XS, version: 0.23
DBD::CSV, version: 0.2002
DBI, version: 1.37
Time::HiRes, version: 1.52
CGI::Request, version: 2.75

Major IMAP problems - corrupted local store
Is anyone else having major problems with IMAP accounts?
Basically, I have a bunch of users who are now having major problems
with corrupt local caches of mail. If I delete the mail folders, and let
Mozilla recreate/redownload the mail, everything is fine. But within a
few hours, messages start getting corrupted - one message will show the
contents of another, some are blank, etc. Deleting the local mail
folders will again fix the problem temporarily.
This all started after I upgraded everyone to 1.6.
Help!!

Are the performance projects still worked on ?
hi all,
I was going through the performance section of the mozilla projects
and found that there are few projects for performance improvement
(http://www.mozilla.org/performance/projects.html). But the last updated
date seems to be very old. Are these projects still underway or have
they been shelved ?
thank you
