I am new to XPCOM. I want to write a ns plugin as a wrapper for MSCOM
component methods. I am uanble to use variants/nsIVariant in the idl
file as a out parameter. I dont know how can i specify out parameter
as nsIVariant or my own type. I read that its not possible in idl to
write scriptable methods having native data types/classes, but if it
is like that, how can be the scriptability achieved for complex
methods ? Please guide me.

rdf vs. relational databases
I'm a newbie to RDF and have been facing a fundamental question as read
more about RDF. RDF positions itself away from plain XML
representations of data saying XML suited for representing data with
containment hierarchies, and where "order" is important, whereas RDF
has a flatter structure, represents only references among different
entities. That sounds just like what a relational database is supposed
to do, and those are critieria when deciding whether to used an XML DB
or a relational DB to store your data.
Where does RDF fit in, and how does it compare to relational databases.

Drag 'n' Drop Project
Here is a small test for all those hardcore JavaScript programmers. Is it
possible to drag'n'drop a text/image element (eg. A or IMG tag) from one
(I)FRAME to another (I)FRAME. This is easy & possible with IE's proprietary
ondrag events. However the question is, is there a work-around using
standard W3C/Firefox onmousedown, onmouseup, etc. events only?
For an example of drag'n'dropping from one FRAME to another (using IE's
events) see:
http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~afsweb/dndp/default2.html
You can download all the files at:

QUERY: drag'n'drop DOM elements between (I)FRAMEs
Hi
I am quite interested in this XPFE project. I am interested in the
drag'n'drop aspect and have a question. Will your drag'n'drop work across
FRAMEs and IFRAMEs?
I notice you have a set of events called ondragenter, ondrop, etc. that are
very similar to the IE's drag'n'drop event names. What I need to do is to
drag any DOM element from one IFRAME to another and drop it in a table
inbetween row 2 & 3 (lets say). Is this possible with XPFE? or XUL?
Many thanks

Tab layout issues
Hello, I'm a bit of a novice with XUL, and I keep running across
problems with layouts. I'll spare you all of the issues I've had so
far and limit myself to the most curious.
If you open the XUL below in Mozilla 1.7.12 or FireFox 1.5.0.2, you'll
notice that the layout of components on the Search tab is forcing the
layout on the second tab to be of a particular size.
As you add and remove widgets on the first panel, the size of the
button on the SECOND panel grows and shrinks accordingly.
Is this a bug or am I missing some key piece of the puzzle to prevent
content on one tab fr

Is there any XPCOM Wrapper for this out there? Is there something else

Stuttering animations
Hi,
within my XUL application the user can create Animations for HTML
objects within an IFrame.
In many cases these animations seem to hang for some milliseconds on
different positions as if they are waiting for another process (eg.

Any ideas how to fix or at least minimize that effect? Is there any way

cross platform plugin with GUI and OpenGL
HI,
I want to develop a mozilla-plugin with opengl and simple GUI elements
(a configuration menu, "about" dialog and so on). It should run on
Linux/Win/Mac. Any hints on how to get into this?
Can this be done with XPFE? Is there any wrapper-lib for cross platform
plugin-development?
TIA

Hi,
I'm getting a js error as follows:
Error:
Components.classes['@mozilla.org/preferences-service;1'].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIPrefService).getBoolPref

Context: backporting the Firefox XUL sidebar support to SEAMONKEY. The final
bit I need to get working is the WebPanel (web-panels.xul). And in fact it
IS working - except for the context menu.
The context menu is poping up, but due to the js errors, none of the menu
items work.
This error is coming from [contentAreaUtils.js]. Do I need to do something

Clearing the XUL Prototype Cache
Hi all,
First and foremost, I am a newbie to this newsgroup, so please forgive
me if I offend anyone in anyway. Before I begin my question, congrats to the
Mozilla team for all the great work done. FireFox, XulRunner and XUL
rocks!!!
I am writing regarding the clearing of the XUL Prototype Cache. My
company is developing a XUL app that uses local xul file (chrome://
protocol). We are trying to do dynamic update when the users are connected
online, and therefore needs to flush the XUL cache when XUL files, CSS files
or JS files in the local folder needs to be updated.

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I have searched the list,

I have recently started learning about XUL, and wanted to first do a File

and as you click on the + button (the "twisty"), the subdirectories will be
fetched via an XmlHttpRequest and dynamically added under that treeitem.
Supposedly there's a method "addObserver" to which I can pass an object
which has the "onToggleOpenState" method defined.

Question on fundamental purposes of XBL (and suggestion to remove access to anonymous content)
I was thinking this morning about the known crash bugs we have in XBL,
and realized that they are almost uniformly due to the content outside
the binding getting hold of the anonymous content and messing around
with it in ways that the XBL back end does not expect.
Which of course made me ask why content outside the binding can accesse
the anonymous elements to start with. And I really don't see a good
reason for this. As I understand XBL, the intent is to create rich
widgets by putting together multiple pieces of content, while having the
whole thing look like a single tag

Generic nsITreeSelection
Have the toolkit team ever considered implementing a generic
nsITreeSelection interface and have the nsITreeSelection inherit from that?
The reason I ask is I would love a generic selection interface that
would be implemented by trees, listboxes and in fact any based XUL

I am working on some "multiple item" based XBL widgets, and it would be
nice to implement such a generic selection interface.
Otherwise I think I'll have to wrap a nsITreeSelection.

XPI install on Windows XP
I've installed Mozilla 1.7.8 and built a .xpi file with associated
install.js and JAR file top create a Mozilla toolbar according to the
instructions in a book "Creating Mozilla Applications". But when I
click a link to the .xpi in a web page after beginning the download the
..xpi is not recognized or apparently associated with any application.
The instructions seem to imply that Mozilla will process the .xpi by
running the install script and installing the application in the JAR
file into the chrome directory under Mozilla.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SOAP and Mozilla
First off - Christian, your suggested solution does look like the
proper route to follow. I came a cross E4X first in my researches, and
I hadn't seen a wink of the SOAPCall libraries that your link points
out. E4X appears to be a perfectly valid, but unusual alternative.
Second off - Unfortunately, the documentation sucks balls. Or maybe I'm
just being thick, but isn't that what documentation is for anyway?.
Some mickey-mouse examples are given, but nothing meaty. Unfortunately,
I don't have an external box for the next couple of days, but when I
get a new ADSL modem I'll post code/

Understanding the Event Model
Hi all,
My application is going to be based largely on manipulating arrays of
GIF images. It would be nice to be able to update a progress bar based
on the successful loading of images. The event model, however, doesn't
seem to be very rich.
How can I understand some more about the event model, and is there any
way to trigger an event on a successful image load?
For example, in pseudocode :
image1.url = http://path/to/image.gif;
image1.onLoad() {
progressBar.progress = progressBar.progress + 1;
}
Cheers,
-T

Update Progress bar from JS-XPCOM Component - screen update / redraw
Hi,
i have a XPCOM Component written in Javascript, i have
a 'interface' to some XUL that shows a progressbar.
updating the pecentage works basically fine but
when i update the progress from within a nsIThread within my JS
Component,
the display won't always be updated, thus the progressbar lags behind.
is there a way tu force update/redraw of certain xul widgets only?
could this possibly be worked around be getting the
UI_THREAD_EVENT_QUEUE
and doing processPendingEvents()? (gives me an exception for now...)
any hints welcome,
TIA,
/ pit

Is XUL dead?
After lunch I found XUL. By 7pm I had a working prototype application.
By 10pm I have discovered that I can't do anything interesting, can't
do anything with web services, the python and perl XPCOM stuff is just
dead links, and all the project pages seem to be dated several years
ago...
Please explain?
What I have is scientific data which needs a snappy light-weight
viewing interface, which I thought I might write in XUL. I'm planning
to write some web services to render views of the data server-side in
GIF/PNG with transparencies, and just write image twiddlers for the
client. H

Load string content into a browser
What's the right way in JS to load the contents of a string into a browser
(with an associated URI for dereferencing relative links)? I thought I'd
found the answer with docShell.loadStream but it's not scriptable.
Thanks,
Matt

xulrunner apps (package references)
1. are there any plans to be able to register read/write package file: links
?
currently we have chrome: for read only applications (code:)
eg chrome://calculator
it would be useful for something like application: for local file locations
(data:)
eg application://calculator
2. ... or is there any reason why we have to code references such as
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Users50\default\tiopnhap.slt\package ??

Stringbundle.getString gives error
I am trying to do something very simple, following a tutorial, and it is
failing.
Here is my string bundle definition in a xul file:
<stringbundleset id="stringbundleset">
<stringbundle id="wat_bundle" src="chrome//wat/locale/wat.properties"/>
</stringbundleset>
In another file, utils.js, I have defined the global variable "watBundle"
and have this initialization code which is called successfully:
function initBundle() {
alert("in main.xul, document = " + document);
watBundle = document.getElementById("wat_bundle");
alert("In main.xul, watBundle = " + watBundl

Independant Binary
Hi all,
It seems to be complicated to get an independant binary like
Firefox/Thunderbird/Firebird etc... I'm currently working with XULRunner
and/or Mozilla to test my project, but how could I release it as a
standalone ? Is that the same as building Firefox ?
Thanks for help !

New XUL feature : Tree cell selection
MDG is about to begin work on a new feature requested by a client, and
we intend to integrate it into the Mozilla source.
1) The ability to have a cell based selector in a tree, allowing us to
navigate by keyboard across a single row to each adjacent column.
2) The ability to attach an event to the tree (or a cell) that would
allow us to know which cell is currently selected when a key (such as
enter) is pressed, based on its row and column.
If you have any comments regarding implementation, please add them in
the Wiki:

Command listeners

I am looking for a way to listen for any number of commands firing, and
intercept whether to cancel them or not. I had thought an nsIController
would do it but no go.

Stopping a dialog closing
Currently when you use <dialog>, the default behaviour ondialogaccept is
for the window to close automatically once your code is executed?
Is there anyway to stop this default and keep the window open? I tried
return false; in the ondialogaccept handler but it didn't work?

Free Mozilla Dev Book Covering XUL/XBL/XPI/XPCOM/etc. (HTML Edition)
Hello,
Allow me to highlight the free HTML edition of Nigel McFarlane's book
titled "Rapid Application Development with Mozilla" that covers the
complete XUL/XBL/XPI/XPCOM/RDF/etc. machinery.
According to Ben Karel's site Ben spend close to 200 volunteer hours
to create the polished HTML rendition. See the result online @

Enjoy.
