secure timestamps and signed XPI certificate expiry problems

Hello, I've created an XPI and I'm about to purchase a code signing certificate in order to sign it and distribute it. I've searched the net and can't find any reference that explains how FireFox treats signed XPIs after the certificate has expired. Microsoft seems to have solved this problem by allowing you to reference a secure timestamp service during code signing. If you do that your application will still work after the certificate has expired - you just can't use that cert to sign new stuff. I have the latest signtool 3.11.5 and it doesn't have any options that let me pro

Code Signing Certificates

What kind of certificates do I purchase to build/sign an XPI file? VeriSign provides these: - Microsoft Authenticode Digital ID - Sun Java Signing Digital ID - Netscape Object Signing Digital ID GeoTrust provides only the first two. The Netscape Object Signing ID seems like it should probably work for Mozilla/Firefox extensions but I'm not sure after reading the following description on the VeriSign site as well as factoring in why GeoTrust does not provide this type of ID: "

Hi I've currently FF 1.5 Beta 1 installed and I'm waiting for the Auto Update to do it's job. My install.rdf is based on a number of sources, but most closely from "Packaging Firefox/Thunderbird Extensions" by Ben Goodger, updated by Benjamin Smedberg 3/1/05. It all looks clean, but when I try to install the xpi in Firefox 1.0.4, it complains "Install script not found". The documentation I have clearly states that "install.js scripts are no longer used for Firefox...", referring to version 0.9 and newer. is there a common way in Mozilla and Firefox to copy additional files in install time?

In Firefox I understand that the additional files that are not Preferences (e.g. some example files) can go to Defaults folder when installing a package. So I started using Defaults instead of Chrome folder and run into problems. Firefox install.rdf understands the Defaults structure from the .xpi file (at least in documentation), but in Mozilla install.js I cannot find how I should refer to that folder with getFolder(). DefRt does not seem to work. Please help! Marja

install.js is deprecated??

In firefox versions 1.0 , the file install.js is ignored?? But from what i read about the documentation of xpinstall, it works by creating install object within the install.js script to intialise the installation, putting files in directories and executing executables using performInstall. It also allows creation of a winreg object which allows us to read and write value from windows registry. But if install.js is deprecated now, can we no longer use xpinstall then? How do we install windows executables and access windows registry if install.js can no longer be used. Is there

getVersion()

Hi, I have some problems with getVersion() because it returns null. I looked in mozver.dat and the add-ons are listed with the correct version info, so I don't know what to look for next. Do you have a tip for me? I have several mozilla directories with the same add-ons installed so there are multiple entries for each add-on, can this be causing this? What should/can I use for testing i.e. what should *not* return null for a default mozilla installation, if any. Thanks, /HJ

Installing plugins in Firefox extensions >= 0.9

Hi all, I'm trying to install a plugin as part of a Firefox extension that I'm developing (using the >= 0.9 Firefox extension API; i.e. install.rdf rather than install.js). Is this possible at all? The Packaging Firefox/Thunderbird Extensions webpage says that "There is now no way of placing files outside of the file structure mandated above during the install process. If you need to modify files elsewhere, you'll have to do it the first time your extension code runs (and then set a pref or something similar so that you don't do it again)." I have two questions: 1. I

Lost Product Images at amazon.com ONLY

Hi: I am just getting up to speed on Firefox 1.0 and have added a number of extensions. Just yesterday, all the images at www.amazon.com fail to appear. If I search for a Linksys router, I get all the descriptions but the place where the "pictures" used to appear "looks" blank. But, the images are apparently there -- I can hover over them and see the links. I can go to any other web site including the UK amazon site and the product images appear. Apparently, I have done something inadvertently to block the product images just at www.amazon.com. I have temporarily disabled

Firefox Windows install in silent mode ?

Greetings. We can get Firefox deployed across the department if the Windows people can run your installer exe in silent mode, so it can be done centrally without alarming users. Is it possible to run Firefox Windows installer in a silent mode ? I'm told the latest nightlies have a .msi package, and that it may be possible to run the 1.0 installer in silent mode, but my contact doesn't know the switches. Can they run in silent mode ? Tutorials

I've been guessing at the Mozilla source codes, and I've screwed up Mozilla suite several times! I just need some good tutorials on RDF and XUL. Also, I would like to know how to open up separate extensions in Win32 Command Prompt. For example, I'm running Netscape 7.2. and in command prompt, it says C:\>start C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe -chat Would launch ChatZilla!. And, the calendar extension would launch by me typing: start C:\Program Files\Netsape\Netscape\Netscp.exe -calendar What file(s) are used to do this?

application/x-xpinstall

Hell, I have installed mozilla 1.7 and I am trying to install calendar*.xpi from mozilla.org. When I click on "Install" it pops a window which says "The file calendar*.xpi is of type application/x-xpinstall (XPInstall, Install ), Mozilla doesnt know of how to handle this file type" . What to do with this file? Save/Open with any app?? Basically, I dont want to save it on to my HD and open/install it using my browser itself, instead...I wanted to install it automatically once I click on "Install" link. I had an entries in xpinstall.whitelist.add in about:config. Please let

Signing Firefox extensions

My company is developing a Firefox 1.0 extension and we would like to digitally sign the XPI. However, Firefox will not recognize the XPI as being signed. We have a certificate from a reputable CA, and have attempted to sign the file using Java's keytool/jarsigner and Netscape signtool. In both cases, the resulting XPI contains a META-INF directory containing the files manifest.mf, zigbert.rsa and zigbert.sf. ( For the Java tools the names of the rsa and sf files are a prefix of the owner of the certificate). In examining the problem, I also tried to install the "simple signed XPI
